About Masaru Okada
Masaru Okada is a ceramic artist based in the small village of
Sumiyama, nestled away in the mountains of Kyoto. Masaru's unique
works of art are inspired by his quiet valley home.
Born in
1963, Masaru learned the ancient art of Kiyomizu ware from his
father. Having mastered the craft, Masaru decided to develop and
form his own unique style. For this, he draws inspiration from his
everyday surroundings. The mountains, clouds, plants and people of
his home are all reflected in his work.
Masaru built his own independent kiln, Sekiungama (The Red Cloud Kiln), in 1987 and his artwork has
since appeared in countless exhibitions and won him several highly
prestigious awards. He is a regular member of the Japan
Kogei Association and a member of the Ceramic Art Association
(Tobiten), and is an official inspector of the Kinki exhibition of
traditional Japanese craft.
